Training of Wayana People in Apetina: Village Characterization, Auto-diagnosis, and Forest Management

In collaboration with the local village foundation Kuluwayak, Tropenbos Suriname is carrying out a training in Apetina within the 2018 workplan of the Shared Resources, Joint solutions (SRJS) program. There are two training courses. The first course is focused on forest management and community forestry. The second course is focused on community based tools for the 'Plan de Vida' concept.

The first training course 'Forest Management' was conducted from 18-21 July 2018.

The goals of the training were:
• Knowledge exchange between the local population and the outsider view
• Participation, input and views of the local population (participants)
• Get to know the view from the board of the local Kuluwayak foundation

The second training course ‘Village characterization and Auto-diagnosis’ was conducted from 7-11 August 2018.

The goals of the training were:
• Make the participants aware of the importance of planning the future
• Introduce the participants to some tools related to the Plan de Vida* concept
• Gain knowledge about the community and their way of thinking within the framework of the Plan de Vida concept
• Encourage participants to think about the importance of planning for the future

* A Plan de Vida is based on understanding the past to analyze the present. By looking critically at the past, a vision for the future can be shaped into a village development plan.
