Domestic Timber Market: Insights and Developments

Domestic Timber Market: Insights and Developments

Suriname - 20 November, 2010

On 12 November 2010, Tropenbos Suriname organized a workshop titled ‘Domestic Timber Market: Insights and Developments’. The goal of the workshop was, through group discussions, to acquire insights in the deficiencies in the areas of knowledge, research and capacity within the domestic timber market.

Prior to the workshop, two days of field visits were held in which three companies were visited. Suma Lumber NV, a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified timber logging and processing company was visited to observe the tree harvesting and wood milling process. Caribbean Parquet Flooring NV and Timber Around NV were visited to observe the manufacturing of wood into end products. The goal of the field visits was to provide participants with practical knowledge of the production chain in order to achieve better insight during the presentations and well-grounded feedback in the group discussions of the workshop.

The output of the Domestic Timber Market workshop is a list of recommendations with regard to policy (government), practice (private sector) and research (Tropenbos Suriname and partners). The proceedings: “Domestic Timber Market: insights and developments” collects these recommendations.
