Sustainable living in Pikin Slee in a changing climate

To improve the resilience to climate change in agriculture, agroforestry techniques will be applied on 2-5 plots of local residents. There will also be an exchange visit with the Ecosystem 2000 foundation, which is carrying out an agricultural project in the village of Gran Tatai.

 

With regard to capacity building of the local community there will be reinforcement of the local organizational capacity and entrepreneurship. Furthermore, a translation will be made of the Multidisciplinary Landscape Assessment (MLA) results from the UNDP Global Climate Change Alliance + (GCCA +) programme that took place from June 2017 to November 2018. At the MLA, 14 participants were taught how to use a GPS and compass. With this knowledge, information was collected about soil, vegetation, agriculture and non-timber forest products.

 

The promotion of knowledge transfer in the field of climate adaptation and agriculture will mainly relate to agroforesrtry and, in addition to farmers, will also be aimed at primary school students. Climate data will be collected by different target groups.

 

To stimulate the exchange of knowledge and experience in the field of sustainable livelihood and climate change, training videos will be produced in the form of course material for the local community. Furthermore, a knowledge event and outreach will be organized.

 

The cooperating partners in the DLP project are the Ministry of Regional Development who will provide the training for agroforestry techniques, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries that will handle plant propagation techniques, and finaly the organization Wi! Uma Fu Sranan and the consultant Ir. Swami Girdhari who will guide the local community and the agricultural cooperation with sale and marketing.
